Sun Care

Bali is situated very close to the equator where the sun can be strong and harmful to unprotected skin. We advise that you use waterproof sun lotion with at least 30+ SPF protection. Do not neglect sun protection even whilst snorkeling. Wearing a T-shirt and hat is highly recommended. If you forget your sunscreen we have a selection available for use that has been left behind by previous guests.

Swimming

Please exercise care and common sense whilst swimming or snorkeling on the house reef. Do not touch corals or any sea creatures as some are venomous. Do not swim in the sea if the weather is too rough. Always let someone know of your whereabouts. Never swim in the open ocean beyond the safety of the house reef.

Tap water

The resort is supplied with fresh water from two wells in the resort area and we are connected to the government water pipeline as well. General Safety & Health Tips

A holiday in Bali is not complete without exploring the treasures of the marine world. Swimming, snorkeling, or diving offer you a great opportunity to do so.

Please consider the following:

  • Do not touch anything underwater.
    • There are creatures that can be poisonous or cause itching or rashes.
  • Do not remove dead or living corals or shellfish from the sea.
  • Plankton may sometimes cause itching or a small rash.
    • Should you experience this, please come and see us at the dive center. Do not try to wash away the residue with water, soap, or sand – vinegar is the best option.
  • We have constructed three entrances to the house reef directly in front of the resort.
    • Out of religious and local regulations we are unfortunately not permitted to build a jetty or sea wall.
    • Heavy wind and wave conditions can make the entrances slippery and difficult to use.
    • Please use booties and inform someone if you are swimming, snorkeling or diving on the house reef.
  • Please limit your swimming activities to the pool when there is high waves or strong wind conditions.
    • Please be aware of how far from the resort you participate in swimming and snorkeling activities.
    • The buoys for our dive boat also mark a reasonable distance for a safe return from your water activities.

Health Tips

  • Do not forget to apply sun protection when swimming or snorkeling in the sea.
    • We recommend wearing strong sunscreen, a t-shirt, and a cap.
  • Due to the high plankton content in the sea, ear infections can easily occur.
    • Wash your ears well with fresh water after each saltwater contact.
    • Do not use cotton buds or fingers to clean your ears.
  • Be sure to drink enough water every day. Your body dehydrates extremely quickly in these climatic conditions.
    • We recommend drinking at least 2-3 liters of water each day and eating lots of fruit.
      • Headaches and fatigue/sluggishness are usually a sign of dehydration (insufficient fluid intake, water).
  • In the event of an ear infection, injury or other health issues contact the reception or the dive center. Please do not wait too long before reporting.
  • We deliberately refrained from installing mosquito nets in the bungalows. The nuisance caused by mosquitoes in the northeast of Bali is limited.
    • If you are susceptible to mosquito bites, use the available incense spirals on your terrace.
    • You will also find mosquito spray and an electric mosquito repellent that you can plug into the wall to reduce mosquitoes in your bungalow.

Plastic Waste in Bali

Indonesia is considered the second-largest producer of plastic waste worldwide. In 2010, 3.22 million tons of plastic waste were disposed of in Indonesia in an uncontrolled manner, an estimated one-third of which ended up in the ocean. A significant portion of Bali’s waste simply ends up uncontrolled in the ocean, where it poses an increasing threat to humans, animals, and the environment.

An evaluation showed that of the daily waste Styrofoam constitutes 5%, plastic straws 12%, plastic bags 15%, plastic bottles 20%, and food packaging 22%. Tourists consume on average five times as many resources as local residents and thus contribute immensely to the growing garbage problem.

The popular holiday island of Bali is visited by over five million tourists every year. At the end of 2017, the Bali government announced a garbage emergency. This wake-up call led to the local government declaring a long-overdue ban on single-use plastic the following year, however, it is not strictly enforced.

Tiza Mafira, the founder of the “Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik (GIDKP)” movement, calls on organizations and authorities not to mislead the public by assuming that recycling alone can solve all waste problems. Rather, recycling activities should enter into a symbiosis with the ban on single-use plastics.

Even without strict enforcement at the government level, local community efforts are diligent and building. The first signs of success are already emerging. Supermarkets and retail chains have banned plastic bags and are selling reusable shopping bags instead. In addition, a growing number of cafes, local restaurants, bars, and hotels have switched completely to stainless steel, glass or bamboo versions of straws and refillable drinking bottles. Regulations that prohibit single-use plastics should not actually burden or punish anyone. Instead, they have been shown to encourage changes in consumer behavior to be more environmentally friendly.

With a lack of a comprehensive waste management system in Bali and no consistent alternatives, general practice is that garbage can be dumped in rivers, green spaces, and on the side of the road – or simply incinerated.

Studies have shown that the key to tackling the problem of plastic waste pollution is a holistic approach. The three R’s (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) have established themselves as a widespread approach since the 2002 World Summit for Sustainable Development and are, among others, strongly promoted by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Bali’s one-way plastic ban is fueling hope that Indonesia’s plastic waste emergency will no longer be tolerated by politicians or society.

Even if a 70 percent decrease in plastic pollution in the sea within a year sounds utopic: a start has been made. And we all must continue to do our part.

Be the change we want to see in the world — GANDHI —

Reduce | Reuse | Recycle &  Drinking Water

At Siddhartha, we work hard to educate our staff, the surrounding community, and our guests about the danger to us and our planet from single-use plastics. We have minimized and almost completely eliminated almost all single-use plastic and packaging in our resort.

We offer FREE drinking water through refill stations throughout the property as well as in your bungalows.  You will also find still (mineral) or sparkling bottled water (in glass bottles) for purchase in your mini-bar, or at the restaurant.

Please note that our employees are instructed to not refill single-use plastic bottles.

Stainless steel bottles can be purchased at reception and in the dive center. The proceeds from the sale of these personal water bottles will go entirely to our environmental projects.

Balian – glass bottle drinking water
These glass bottles with natural, high-quality mineral water from a spring in the Mt. Agung area.

The sale of Balian Drinking Water supports a local village community whose inhabitants largely make a living as employees of this company.

Single-Use Plastic Bottles & Bags

We ask that you please minimize bringing any single-use plastic bottles and bags to our resort. Kubu is far from any landfills and has no government waste management. The recycling companies we approach no longer accept plastic bottles, so they inevitably end up in wild landfills.

Kubu Marine Park – Reef Restoration & Conservation

We founded “Kubu Marine Park” in 2012 and are registered in Bali as a non-profit association. The purpose of “Kubu Marine Park” is to protect the environment, educate and sensitize students about active measures for environmental protection, and avoid waste of all kinds, in particular – plastic.

Together with local authorities and schools, we organize 3-4 annual events to remove garbage from wild landfills, roads, greens, and forest areas. The collected waste is sorted by us and delivered to local recycling companies in Karangasem, who in turn ensure this waste is disposed of appropriately.

After the volcanic eruption of Mt. Agung in the early 1960s, many reefs were destroyed and covered with a thick layer of volcanic sand. With our House Reef artificial reef project, we continue to increase the fish and promote natural coral growth on the reefs around Kubu again. This is an ongoing project and one that is dear to our hearts. Every dive you make with us contributes funds to support the reef-building and conservation activities – we thank you for your support.

Direct donations are always welcome too. Please contact the dive center for more information or email us at (dive@siddhartha-bali.com )
